Perry Keyes – The Soft Blue Sky

The Soft Blue Sky is a new music theatre work that centres on post-industrial urban migration in Sydney in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. It examines the effects on the lives of the inner city working class communities who were dislocated – whole and in part – broken up and shifted away to the outlying western suburbs with limited infrastructure.

The work is lead by the songs of folk-rock artist Perry Keyes with the songs coming from his new album Sunnyholt and his previous albums Johnny Ray’s Down Town, Meter and The Last Ghost Train Home.

A visual world of moving and still images, archival footage and contemporary places and faces, created by photographer/filmmaker Johnny Barker, underscores the work.

No-one has ever documented the stories of the working class inner-city and the welfare-driven underclass as mercilessly and lovingly as Perry has. He is acute and relentless. He’s proven adept at writing songs for an album with the overall theme in mind, creating narratives to serve that vision.” Tim Freedman singer/songwriter
